Stain on texture: Perception of a dark spot having a blurred edge on textured backgrounds

چکیده
When distinguishing illumination from reflectance edges, both edge blurriness and textural continuity across an edge are generally used as cues to promote the illumination-edge interpretation. However, when these cues were combined, i.e., when a dark spot having a blurred edge was placed on textured backgrounds, we unexpectedly found that the spot appears stained or painted rather than differently illuminated ("stain on texture" phenomenon). This phenomenon suggests a disruptive interaction between the visual processing of blurred edges and background texture. Our experiments showed that middle spatial-frequency components of background texture play a critical role in producing this interaction. Specifically, when a textured background had relatively stronger energy in middle spatial-frequency bands, the dark spot having a blurred edge on the textured background was perceived as differing in reflectance. The findings are discussed in view of multiple levels of visual processes: one mainly concerns low-level features such as spatial-frequency components and another is a higher-level process that takes into account the likelihood of spatial configurations in natural scenes, such as "spot shadow" in which the shadow is isolated and the shadow caster is out of sight.

Ethanol-based Tape Casting Process of the Textured Bi0.5(Na0.80K0.20)0.5TiO3-BiFeO3 Ceramics
The rheological and tape casting behavior of ethanol-based Bi0.5(Na0.80K0.20)0.5TiO3-7 mol% BiFeO3 (BNKT-BF) slurries was investigated. The effect of sintering temperature profile on texture development with a preferred orientation was also studied. A 50 MPa pressure assisted three step sintering profile promoted extensive texture development together with densification. The role of BF as a sin...
متن کاملTexture Boundary Detection - A Structural Approach
Perception of different textures is caused by differences in distribution of properties of texture elements. However, in practice it is difficult to extract useful texture elements, especially from natural images in which texture elements exist at various scales. To extract texture elements of all sizes a multiscale approach is unavoidable. This paper describes a multiscale method, based on mea...
متن کاملEdge-Based Method for Text Detection from Complex Document Images
Detection of text from documents in which text is embedded in complex colored and textured backgrounds is a very challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a simple texture-based approach based on edge information for this task. The performance of our method is compared to that obtained by a method based on the discrete cosine transform which was recently proposed by Zhong et al. [12] for t...
متن کاملA Detection-Theoretic Approach to Texture and Edge Discrimination
We present a probabilistic approach to the discrimination between textured areas and edges; locally defined probabilistic models are used, which model textured areas as sinusoidal and edges as phase-congruent signals. We build a link with energy-based feature detection and propose a simple approach to the discrimination between these two classes. This facilitates the selective use of texture/ed...
متن کاملAn edge and texture preserving algorithm for error concealment in video sequences
In this paper we propose a novel error concealment algorithm for block-based video transmission over errorprone networks. In particular, we develop a spatial error concealment technique which combines edge-preserving interpolation and texture analysis and synthesis, providing a reconstruction of lost macroblocks optimized for visual perception. In particular, the algorithm recovers image edges ...
